Romans 2:3-5 “If you judge those who do these kinds of things while you do the same things yourself, think about this: Do you believe that you will escape God’s judgment? Or do you have contempt for the riches of God’s generosity, tolerance, and patience? Don’t you realize that God’s kindness is supposed to lead you to change your heart and life? You are storing up wrath for yourself because of your stubbornness and your heart that refuses to change. God’s just judgment will be revealed on the day of wrath.” (CEB)
A Christ follower’s life is supposed to reflect a change and a difference from those who are not followers. Your focus should be on your actions, behavior and attitude, not on those of others.
Sometimes we look at those who are not Christ followers focusing on their deeds and we judge them, believing that we are better than they are because, after all, we don’t do these things. The reality though is that, because we are human, we have the capacity to do evil.
By condemning the actions of others, you are thinking of yourself as superior to them. Instead, you should see yourself as equal to them but with a very specific difference. The fact that you have accepted Christ as the filter between you and God makes you a new being and changes your position in His eyes. You are still human and have the capacity to do the same things as non-followers. This positional change is the result of God’s gift of salvation through Christ. It is because of God’s generosity, tolerance, and patience towards you as an imperfect human being that you have this position. Rather than judging and condemning those who do wrong, you should say to yourself: “There but for the grace of God go I.”
God’s gift of salvation through Jesus Christ should lead you to change both your heart and your life. The change of heart is a change in your thought process from that of a focus on what others do to a focus on what you do and the consequences in your life.
When you begin to see yourself as a servant of God, your actions will reflect service to Him and a focus on pleasing God with your life. Your life must be transformed from a self-centered orientation to a God-centered relationship. You must live your life to honor, praise, and worship God in all that you do without looking at yourself as better than those who have not come to this realization.
God’s interest is not in the action but in the heart. Change the heart and the action will change. It is the intent with which you do what you do that is of utmost importance to God. By changing your focus to serve God because of who he is and not because of your own efforts, your attitude and focus will be on God.
A persistent refusal to change your attitude displaces God and puts you on a path that will lead you to be judged by God for your attitude. Change your focus from the actions of others to your own actions and attitudes. Concentrate on pleasing God with your life and your attitude. Change is not inevitable.
Change is a choice you make. Chose to change your focus to pleasing God and away from judging others form not doing so.
