James 5:14-15 If any of you are sick, they should call for the elders of the church, and the elders should pray over them, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord. Prayer that comes from faith will heal the sick, for the Lord will restore them to health. And if they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
Almost everyone gets sick at one point or another in their lives and if you are a believer experiencing sickness, you should call on the elders of your local congregation.
The assumption here is that you are in fellowship with a group of believers. The assumption is also that the group of believers, or assembly of believers, has the proper leadership of elders and not just a pastor. The elders are those men in leadership of the local congregation who are to be men of faith.
It is these leaders, or elders, that must be called on in timers of trouble and in times of rejoicing. The local assembly of believers is an extension of the Church of Christ. Every believer must be in fellowship with other believers locally and must be in submission to the authority of that local assembly.
The next assumption is that the elders practice the methods set forth in the New Testament for the local assembly. The elder’s job is to respond to the call of that believer and earnestly pray for him or her with the anointing of oil.
The oil does not have magical healing powers. It is symbolic of the anointing by God. The responsibility is two-fold. First, the elders must pray with a tremendous amount of faith. Second, the person who is being prayed for must also have faith that they will be healed.
Medicine may come into play here. If you pray for headlong they your doctor tells you to administer a specific treatment, follow it. This is part of how God heals. He created medicine. He created the science behind the medicine.
There are some today who subscribe to the theology of faith healing and go to services where a preacher lays hands on them and supposedly heals them. Be cautious with this type of preaching that appeals to helping you feel better.
If you submit to the will of God, understand that it may be His will that you remain sick for a time. It may be His will that you go through this sickness to help someone else.
By living in God’s will, you can give the glory to God whether or not you are healed. The fact is that faith will heal you either physically or spiritually. Submit to God’s will either way.
