He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel. 2 Timothy 1:9-10
We sometimes think and believe that we received God’s grace the moment we first believed on the name of Jesus Christ for salvation but according to Paul, that is incorrect. A believer is not saved at the time of conversion. He is saved from the beginning of time.
We tend to apply the laws of time to God and His grace but those laws don’t apply at all. If you are saved, it is not because you believed, got on your knees and prayed the sinner’s prayer. You were saved before the beginning of time.
God knew you and chose you to be a believer. He called you and picked you out individually. You could neither choose to believe or not to believe. You had no say in it whatsoever. God’s plans were drawn up before the beginning of time. It’s not that God knew who would or who would not believe. God chose who would or would not believe. He created each and every human being for a purpose. Some were created to be in His presence forever and some not. It is God’s sovereign choice, not ours, that provided salvation.
From God’s point of view, you have existed from before the beginning of time as a part of His plan. He saved you before you were born. He chose you to be a member of His family. Think about the anticipation God has always felt knowing that you would eventually be born, go through life and come to the point when you realized that God does love you and has chosen you. He waited patiently for you for eons until you finally arrived. The closest comparison if of a father or mother eagerly anticipating the birth of a child. The child is part of the family from the time of conception, not from the moment of birth. The parents wait nine months for child to arrive and they love that child in every way, shape and form even though he or she has not yet seen the light of day. The joy of the parents is complete when that child breaks through the womb and takes its first breath but it began the moment the parents learned of the conception.
Similarly, God conceived you to be His child. He just had to wait patiently for you to be born and conceptually arrive at the point of understanding His great love for you. God also created Jesus and provided all the means necessary for Jesus to be born, live and be crucified at a particular moment in time. It was God’s plan all along and time and history had to catch up to God’s eternal plan.
Being that this is all God’s doing and not yours, there is no reason to even think that you decided to follow Jesus. You decided nothing. God decided. It was God that loved you and chose you before the beginning of time. Think about how amazing God’s love is that you would be in His heart from time immemorial. You are so special and were created with a special purpose by God. You were chosen to be a believer and follower of Christ. You were chosen to be holy and live a holy life. You were chosen to be His child. What an amazing thought that God chose me and not the other way around.
