Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the champion who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
We are to run the race of holiness that God has set before us. It doesn’t say that we are to win the race because the race has already been won by Jesus the champion. The race is a marathon and Jesus already crossed the finish line. Our task is to follow Him and cross that line also. Jesus is the one who is helping us make it to that line. He’s already received the prize for us at the cost of his suffering and he did that because he kept his eyes on the future that awaited him. Similarly we need to keep our eyes on the same trophy he received because it is our trophy too.
